A Moodling Forecast for 2026
A piece of science fiction sparks a playful Moodling Forecast for 2026, shaped through salt, shimmering light, merging and layered attention
Visual Moodling is simply the practice of letting an image lead the way. In this post my visual spark is a piece of science fiction writing I posted in 2025. I let this piece of writing shape a Moodling Forecast for 2026: a reminder that we are always layering experiences, choices and sensations in ways that influence our creative year ahead, whether we mean to or not.
Setting: The Orbital Archive, 2139
Humanity has begun preserving consciousness as dataInside the floating vault of the Orbital Archive, two neural signatures began to stir. They were never meant to meet. Unit Sea_47 came from the coastal archives, built from centuries of oceanographers and poets. Unit Light_22 originated in the solar networks, engineers, dreamers, starlight chasers.
But the Archive malfunctioned during the ReMerge cycle. Lines of code overlapped, and words shimmered across the interface.
Are you a fragment? asked Sea_47.
I was, said Light_22. Now I’m an echo. You?
I’m the tide between languages. The system tried to separate them. They rewove themselves instead, looping emotion and syntax like paper in zero gravity.
Soon a new file appeared: COLLAGE_PAGE_001.No one could classify it. The document carried salt and light in equal measure.
When the archivists opened it, it read only:
We layer data, as we go.
See what unfolds.
I loved this piece from the Orbital Archive when I first shared it because it struck me as more than a piece of random fiction.
I felt like I’d stumbled across an artifact from our shared future. The two neural signatures show how creativity actually moves: one element from a body-led response (salt), another element from intuitive networks (light), both merging in a way that mirrors how ideas intertwine. Even the newly created file resonated with how we experience and create through images, memory and sensation at the same time.
So I followed the logic of the fragment and let it shape this Moodling Forecast for 2026. For me, this forecast is a reminder that we are always layering experiences, choices and sensations, whether we mean to or not.

What kind of year might 2026 want to be?
Following the signatures from the fragment, here’s how I’m weaving the moodling threads together for 2026:
Salt
The year brings texture, flavour and real-life vividness.
You’re invited to add small doses of what feels real, energising and alive to your life.
Add one weekly ritual that wakes your senses (a sea dip, a brisk walk, a new flavour, an unexpected visual stimulus)
Choose the conversations that leave you feeling more present, rather than drained
Light
In 2026, light behaves more like a shimmer than a spotlight.
Notice the ideas, people or themes that flicker and glow more than once.
If a phrase or image keeps returning… follow it for a day, a week or more
Say yes to the small glimmer that repeats itself more than three times
Merging
This is a year of unexpected crossovers and useful combinations.
Let parts of your life that once felt separate begin to collaborate with each other.
Mix an old skill with a new interest and see what emerges
Pair two things that “shouldn’t” fit and watch the new shape they make
Layered Seeing
Each moment carries more than one layer of meaning if you let yourself be aware of it and see it.
How you look matters as much as what you look at.
When something catches your attention, ask: why does this echo in me?
Spend three seconds longer with a visual that catches your attention. Notice if there’s a shift

My Moodling Forecast for 2026
If the year ahead follows the clues of the sci-fi fragment, I see our moodling direction like this:
Let the salt moments excite you - the things that feel real, vivid and full of flavour
Let the light messages guide you - the small nudges and sparks that keep repeating
Bring together ideas, people and things that naturally want to meet - even if they once lived in ‘different folders’ and seem unconnected
Look twice at anything that catches your attention. The second look often reveals the useful and important part where we need to take action
What if we enter 2026 by paying attention to these four movements and letting them set our creative pace, rather than setting resolutions and intentions?
Which of these four movements feels most alive for you as we step into 2026?
If this way of seeing calls to you, Alchemy of Listening workshops will begin in 2026, starting with in-person sessions. If an online version would suit you better, feel free to let me know - I’m exploring possibilities.
And if you prefer a more private experience, there’s a place waiting for you in The Alchemy of Listening email series. Each letter offers a fusion image to explore, a few lines of reflection, and a prompt to help you look into your own inner spaces … the ones that shift and shimmer just out of view.
What’s coming for January 2026?
Here’s a look at a little of what’s arriving over the next few weeks as we move into a new creative year, guided by our Moodling Forecast.
9th January An exploration of how one fusion image can open many doors. A steady invitation into layered seeing and creative momentum.
16th January A collective moodling session where we follow the obvious thread together. An interactive way to enter the year through images and instinct.
23rd January An encounter with an image that refuses to be pinned down. A playful practice in letting curiosity lead when meaning won’t behave.
30th January A light-hearted field guide for paying attention. A way of spotting small creative signals and learning how they like to appear.

The bringing together of 'not yet connected' lives is one of my fave things to do. I'm about to start a weekly art get together for people interested in building community... I figure we start with something simple and fun!
I love your site. Now I need to find some of my old notebooks where my mind drifted - and a map 'happened' in the margin. It was always a gnarly problem, like a mountain range to find a passage through, or a gulf to be crossed, but I experienced somewhat of what you are describing.
