Hi, moodlers!
I've been reading Rob Walker's "The Art of Noticing" Substack regularly for some years now and I can honestly say that almost every post gives me something to either think about or even better, get excited about!
I love that! (Hence the art card I've chosen for today's post)
His recent post "Every Single [X]" was one that energised me!
PS: “energise” is my Word of the Year for 2023.
He talks of personal quests/missions/projects and this immediately resonated with me.
I often do these kinds of things informally, as part of a photography project, but his piece got me thinking about formalising a quest somehow. I’ve always loved Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and more recent Heroine versions with a feminine perspective - more on that in my next post!
My first thought on a personal quest is this: I live on the beautiful Isle of Wight in the South of England. I've been here just over 3.5 years and as I love beaches as a space to breathe, swim and moodle, I'm going to set my moodling quest as "visit every beach on the Isle of Wight". Of course, it has to be a moodling quest as that’s how I roll.
Google tells me there are over 20 beaches here, so I should be able to manage that! I’ve already visited half of them I’m sure!
I’ve not set any time limit/deadline as yet - I'll keep it open-ended. After all, I plan to live on this island for a long time to come! I'm sure some smaller quests will develop as I explore and learn more about this fantastic island.
I encourage you to read Rob’s article, which is chock full of ideas and then let me know what your quest or even quests, would be!
The card art
I love … hearts! I have rather a large collection of heart trinkets in my home, and this is also one of my favourite heart patterns - a variation of the Triskel Zentangle pattern by Ina Sonnenmoser. For this card, I drew the hearts, added colour in greens and pinks (a favourite palette) and finally simple embellishments. This is card number 9 in the set of 50.
If you want to find out a bit more about the project and a little bit of backstory, head to the About page. If you are wondering what a Delight Detective is, you can read more in my Delight Diaries archive below.
Visiting all the beaches would be a great quest!
Local quests are great because you often ignore/bypass local destinations with the notion that "I'll get there at some point." But, well, you haven't yet, so why not just change that. :) Perhaps a loose time goal might help add some additional motivation—at least an excuse—to spend that next weekend checking out a new-to-you beach.
I think my project started when I moved to this house Debs, it’s ongoing... this hill I live on has been my muse since the first day I set eyes on it. I wanted to discover every corner, know it’s history, it’s tendencies, it’s occupants. The history is hard found, nobody here seems to remember (or want to share) past occurrences very readily sadly. I will never stop being curios though!
I look forward to more moodles from your twenty beaches with pleasure ! X
