Kumapelo: Mapping a Life, One Piece at a Time
Introducing a practice-led space for personal mapping, using lived experience as the starting point.
This is a Sunday Pocket Note
What are Sunday Pocket Notes? Spontaneous small drops of light-hearted curiosity. A piece of art, a map, a moodle, an image or a tiny reflection that slips lazily into your day. Sometimes playful, thoughtful, or lightly mischievous. I might invite you to look a little closer, follow a small thread, or step into a wider landscape that’s been taking shape in the background by laying a few things out in ways that make more sense over time.
I’ve been working on something new and I wanted to work out a way to share this with you. I want to open the door to let you into my ideas and conceptual space.
This space is called Kumapelo and it’s coming soon
Kumapelo is a new practice-led space for personal mapping. This is where maps can be made from our lived experiences, that we can keep coming back to over time. It’s a space where we can find our bearings and ourselves, again and again, in our own time, without schedules or demands to turn up in online classroom spaces. Here we are allowed to pay closer attention to our lives, emotions, knowledge, dreams, and habits.
In Kumapelo, maps are our visual companions, story keepers, and invitations to reflect on our lives and often to dig deep in a visual way. Here, mapping is our primary practice.
Moments, memories, questions, places and experiences will all be raw materials for our own personal mapping journeys. We might draw, we might write or we might just notice where we are in our lives and what is coming up for us. The work here will be practical and hands-on, but it leaves plenty of space for our own intuition and half-formed thoughts to mingle without being rushed into clarity or a “finished product”. That is not what we are about.
Presence, not pressure
Kumapelo is for anyone who is curious about their own life and how it unfolds. You don’t need to think of yourself as creative, or as an artist, writer, or map-maker. This is a space that offers a visual way to gather what feels scattered, to listen to what’s emerging, and to begin making sense of what’s going on inside, without doing just one more course, forcing decisions or pushing for answers.
Over the next few Sundays, I’ll be walking you around this world, one part at a time. Next week, we’ll take a peek into the Map Room and show you where the work of mapping a life happens.
For now, I’d love to know what you think of this idea and whether you’d be interested in this kind of space to moodle with maps! I’ll see you next Sunday.
Looking for updates from my studio?
The Moodling Letter is where I share what I’m working on - from photography and mixed media pieces to hand-drawn maps - along with invitations to exhibitions, open studio days, and workshops (both in-person and online) where you can experience or take part in the process.
