The Map Room
A peek into the calm space for personal map making, where you can slow down, settle, and work entirely at your own pace.
This is a Sunday Pocket Note
What are Sunday Pocket Notes? Spontaneous small drops of light-hearted curiosity. A piece of art, a map, a moodle, an image or a tiny reflection that slips lazily into your day. Sometimes playful, thoughtful, or lightly mischievous. I might invite you to look a little closer, follow a small thread, or step into a wider landscape that’s been taking shape in the background by laying a few things out in ways that make more sense over time.
Welcome back to Kumapelo and the first space we’ll encounter within it is the Map Room.
When we enter the Map Room, we are greeted by sunlight and space rather than a noisy, overwhelming world. There are windows ahead of us - there is openness, fresh air. We can see where we are and there’s a sense of welcome. We can let out a deep breath - or two.
Tables are there ready for use, with enough inviting space to lay a few things down, pause and work at our own pace. The walls are edged with shelves and drawers where we can access interesting resources we need them. Each one holds something specific. They’ll still be there when we come back, so there is no need to feel pressured or to rush to look at everything at once.
Pinned postcards, scraps, ideas, maps, sticky notes on the walls are points of orientation and inspiration.
The Map Room is designed to welcome us
Calm first, then curiosity
No demands for immediate action
There are places which invite us to start things, but there is no pressure to choose the right starting point. We are allowed to moodle, to sit in a comfy chair for a while and most importantly to leave things un-started or unfinished.
We come to settle, and then, when we are ready, to create, make and map
We don’t come here to perform or to keep up
Next week, we’ll turn our attention to the Cabinet, where things are organised for the moments when we want a little more structure. In the meantime, tell me if this is the kind of room you’d like to spend time in?
Looking for updates from my studio?
The Moodling Letter is where I share what I’m working on - from photography and mixed media pieces to hand-drawn maps - along with invitations to exhibitions, open studio days, and workshops (both in-person and online) where you can experience or take part in the process.
